Art as an Early Warning System

IMPAKT presentation in Yerevan, Armenia

Art as an Early Warning System

Media Art, Digital Agency, and the Infrastructures That Make Critique Possible

Media artists often identify the social and political effects of new technologies before they enter mainstream debate. But critical artistic practice does not develop in isolation. It needs institutions, networks, funding, and spaces for exchange.

Drawing on IMPAKT’s work with CODE, EMAP, S+T+ARTS Buen-TEK, and the curatorial training programme Full Spectrum, Arjon Dunnewind (general director IMPAKT) will discuss how media-art organisations can create these conditions.

CODE supports co-creation and collective working processes. It brings artists and non-artists together around questions of digital agency, surveillance, data economies, and AI. Full Spectrum places similar emphasis on peer feedback, exchange, and mutual support. EMAP and Buen-TEK create international opportunities through residencies, research, and collaborations between artists, institutions, researchers, and local communities.

The talk will also ask how international networks can become more reciprocal. How can knowledge, resources, and opportunities circulate in different directions? And how can international connections strengthen locally rooted practices? The presentation will lead into a discussion about what kinds of networks could connect Armenia’s media-art scene more strongly with international partners.
