Capitalism Intelligence Unit – ‘Utrecht Metabolism’
The Utrecht Metabolism project undertaken by the Capitalism Intelligence Unit (CIU) studies the capitalist metabolism of the city. You are invited to participate in a cartography workshop in which we will chart the city’s metabolism. Flows of capital continually form around the monetary energy of tangible products and back again. The city behaves like a capitalist organism. The results of this study will be incorporated into a capitalist-metabolic map of Utrecht.
It is not seen as the done thing to discuss what we earn or what we buy. Is this a cultural defence mechanism? Is it a cultural-psychological phenomenon that maintains the social status quo with all its mutual differences?
We will track a variety of people. Who earns what? Who lives where and why? We will study who consumes what. But that is only the beginning. Because what do the houses, cars, roads and lampposts in the street where they live cost? How does this person move through the city? What are their shopping lists like? And where do their children go to school?
How does the city’s capitalist digestive tract function? How rational is its head and how ethical its heart? During Utrecht Metabolism we will define the city on the basis of cold, hard cash, in spite of our reservations.
The tour starts daily at 15:00 from Theater Kikker.
The Capitalist Metabolism Utrecht Tour is part of the Work Songs programme curated by Monnik.
