FESTIVAL 2014′ TEASER – SOFT MACHINES: WHERE THE OPTIMIZED HUMAN MEETS ARTIFICIAL EMPATHY

Impakt Festival 2014: Soft Machines

“Robots will neither be common nor very good in 2014″ — Isaac Asimov, 1964

The moving image has always been fascinated by the idea of the machine that can feel. Perhaps it comes from self-recognition: cinema has always imagined its own equipment–camera, projector–as machines capable of deep empathetic rapport. But the fact remains that Isaac Asimov was eerily prescient about his predictions for 2014–autonomous artificial intelligences, with or without emotions, are still mostly the stuff of fantasy and nightmare.

In this context, what would a realist approach to affect and technology look like in film and video? What if the genre set aside dreams of robots and advanced A.I.s for a descriptive approach to the world around it?  Who would be its subjects? And what would be its plots and conventions? The works selected here suggest a range of possible responses, all of which manage to simultaneously resonate with and exceed our lived experience.

This program selection is a teaser to the upcoming IMPAKT Festival that explores the theme “Soft Machines”, the intersection of affect and machines, taking the concept of empathy as both its content and form. Join us between October 29th and November 2nd at one of the Utrecht’s venue and find out more!
