In this brand new edition, Sunday School goes into the travel experience of the 21st century. The days of mass tourism are behind us thanks to the increasing hothouse effect, the lurching credit crunch and exploding tourist hotels. But fortunately enough, it is no longer required to leave the house for an authentic travel experience. Yet if you insist to get out there, you can travel further and in a smarter way than in the past.

The Utrecht Flickr Photo pool is all the traveling inspiration poet Ingmar Heytze needs. Game researcher David Nieborg presents us the 21^st century armchair traveler, better known as the gamer. He exemplifies the role of traveling in gaming culture and shows us the most beautiful and virgin destinations in recently developed worlds. Radio maker Jorrit Brenninkmeijer presents the latest edition of SoundTransit – an expanding online project in which sonic travel experiences are gathered for others to relive by ear.

And for those who still want to venture outside, Ronald Heister presents Your Galaxy, a travel agency specialized in destinations located far outside earth’s atmosphere, while Abidin Travels promotes memorable trips to Baghdad (as featured at the Venice Biennale 2007). Films and visuals by Roy Villevoye, Jan Dietvoorst and Aaron Koblin.

Sunday School is an intellectual variety show in which scientists, designers and artists explore various themes from surprising perspectives. This event is Dutch spoken.

Ingmar Heytze

Ingmar Heytze is landelijk bekend als dichter, performer en columnist. Naast zo’n vijfenzeventig optredens per jaar dicht hij met regelmaat over de actualiteit in opdracht van radio, televisie en papieren media. Verder schrijft hij live gedichten bij vergaderingen en congressen en gedichten in opdracht voor een veelheid aan opdrachtgevers. Hij geeft schrijfcursussen bij het ILFU en Querido Academy.

David Nieborg

Dr. David B. Nieborg is a Professor of Media & Platform Studies at the University of Toronto. He teaches at the Department of Arts, Culture and Media and is cross-appointed with the Faculty of Information. He holds a PhD from the University of Amsterdam and held fellowships with the Jackman Humanities Institute and the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton. His previous affiliations include MIT, the Queensland University of Technology, the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Utrecht University, and the University of Amsterdam. David has a past career as a consultant, a newspaper journalist, and he co-founded an award-winning game company. He published widely on the game industry, app and platform economics, and game journalism in academic outlets such as New Media & Society, Social Media + Society, Internet Policy Review, and Media, Culture and Society.

Jorrit Brenninkmeijer

Jorrit Brenninkmeijer is a radio maker and with his own documentary agency, Het Fotogenieke Geluid, specializing in audio stories.

Ronald Heister

Ronald Heister (Netherlands, 1965) made his studies in communications & marketing. His career started working for nationwide public television & radio in the Netherlands. Amongst others, Ronald presented the daily news on radio as well as popular nationwide entertainment programs. His experience in communication with complex politic issues was value added to the City of Amsterdam, where he was appointed Director of Communications to the Mayor & Aldermen. In that position, Ronald Heister – amongst others - was involved with organization of the marriage of HRH the Crown Prince of the Netherlands and was granted a Medal of Honor by HM the Queen. At present, Ronald Heister is the founder of his own Public Relations company, based in Amsterdam. In 2008 he founded Your Galaxy, the first travel agency in space tourism in the Benelux, representing amongst others Virgin Galactic as Accredited Space Agent.
