The festive opening of the IMPAKT Festival 2026 marks the beginning of five days of performances, exhibitions, films, and conversations exploring Techno-Ancestrality—the idea that ancestral knowledge can inspire alternative approaches to technology.

The evening opens with an introduction by the festival’s curators, who will present the themes of this year’s programme and reflect on how traditional knowledge systems—from cosmology and craft to Indigenous practices of care and ecological stewardship—continue to shape ways of imagining technological futures.

Rather than seeing technology as a story of seamless progress, the festival approaches it as a set of choices, responsibilities, and relationships between people, environments, and infrastructures.

Following the curatorial introduction, Payal Arora will deliver the keynote lecture Building On The Library Of The Incalculable. Drawing on insights from her book From Pessimism to Promise and her forthcoming project Library of the Incalculable, Arora explores forms of knowledge and value that escape the logic of computation—arguing that intelligence is not only predictive or algorithmic, but also relational, embodied, and rooted in lived cultural practices.

After the keynote, the opening continues with a sonic lecture and Winti performance by Jaasir Linger, Marian Markelo, and Warimbo Krioro, exploring Afro-Surinamese ritual traditions through percussion, song, narration, and embodied knowledge.

The keynote Payal Arora: Building On The Library Of The Incalculable is presented in collaboration with V2_ Lab for the Unstable Media, Rotterdam, on the occasion of the upcoming book release of “The Library of the Incalculable” by V2_ Publishing.
