THE GIF CAVE: the anthropological approach of the digital phenomenon GIF

FROM FRIDAY 8 JUNE 14:00H UNTIL SATURDAY 17:00H, THE GIF CAVE WILL BE OPEN. Join in. Live acts by Nerefuh, EhCaetano Menuzúm, Linda Franke, Moemlien, Fyoelk, Margarita Osipian, DOG, DJ Boris Becker, Friso Wiersum, DJs Sacred GIF(t)s (Joris and Kristy Foom), Jessica Dill.

From 8 to 10 June, the city of Utrecht will host the very first edition of CVLTFEST, initiated by Cult Dealer Enzo: an underground, crowd-sourced festival, centering on collaborations between Utrecht cultural collectives and scientists against the backdrop of Utrecht’s monumental wharves. More than 150 individuals and collectives will present their interdisciplinary interpretation of Sound along the wharves and in the cellars of the Oudegracht.

Impakt will be represented by the Brazilian artist in residence-duo Caetano Carvalho & Leandro Cardoso, who will build a GIF-cave in the cellar of Setup’s temporary exhibition space on Oudegracht 183. In the installation, composed together with historian, world music expert and DJ Friso Wiersum, they will explore their anthropological approach of the digital phenomenon GIF. These animated images, widely produced and re-used in our web 2.0 era often serve as personal avatars, as illustrations of a trending topic or as autonomous entity. The Cave is composed of multiple artifacts and projected animated images (GIFs). Based on the classical use of the ‘cave’ as a philosophical trope (in Plato, Nietzsche, Waly Salomão, Mike Kelley), the GIF Cave will have an allegorical and ritualistic purpose for those inside it:

My leg’s bite, I found our cave! There’s a gypsum fossil in there and an animated gif that has been looping for 7,000,000,000 years. Even though no carbon 14 determination was possible. Contrary to what people think, humans evolved in the steppe and its caves while the ape evolved in the forest. Every prophet with their own cave: Plato, Zarathustra, Waly Dada Salomão, Mike Kelley… and us. Mankind developed its constructivist impetus in the cave. The gif cave is not only a classical philosophical trope but also the human cradle. It is there that we find the most ancient inscriptions. Whilst the gypsum 3D print dries THE HUMAN WAS MADE OUT OF CLAY WAS MADE

Also on Friday 8 June at Oudegracht 183, Impakt artist in residence Linda Franke’s new work will be premiered at 20:30h.
