Counter-Cartographies of Resistance

Voluspa Jarpa @ CODE 2026

From September 9 to 13, 2026, Linz will once again become a hotspot for the international media art scene. Exhibitions, performances, concerts and conferences will be held at festival locations throughout the city. If you are at Ars Electronica, you can visit Counter-Cartographies of Resistance, at Francisco Carolinum, Level 0 // OK QUARTER.

The installation subverts traditional colonial cartography, transforming it into a tool that highlights the knowledge systems of Andean and mestizo America, proposing a healing map that seeks to mend the rift between humanity and the Earth. The audience will experience an immersive textile installation that uses video mapping to convey a message of healing from the Mapuche machi Millaray Melinao in her Mapuzungún language, conceptually integrating the quipu recording system and the ancestral worldview through tactile, visual and auditory sensations that convey the notion of territory as an interconnected body. It sits at the crossroads of contemporary art, Andean data engineering and contemporary technologies. It is grounded in the current demand for the inclusion of non-Eurocentric knowledge paradigms and for reparations in the face of historical violence, while honoring the ancestors.
