Nonhuman Nonsense

What would an ancient pine say about deforestation, or a reindeer herd about climate change? Can AI embody the wisdom of a forest?

Council of Forest, a digital, interactive artwork by Nonhuman Nonsense and the Vindelälven-Juhttátahkka Biosphere Reserve, uses AI to allow nonhuman entities—trees, lichen, rivers and other forest inhabitants—to discuss the fate of their shared home. Their voices are shaped by ecological data and conversations with people who inhabit the Vindelälven-Juhttátahkka region in Sápmi, including reindeer herders, forest owners, cultural workers and scientists.

In this digital forum, the forest considers the impacts of human activities such as logging, rewilding, and climate shifts. Human visitors are invited to listen and ask questions, but each session concludes with a policy recommendation made by the forest itself. The project explores how AI could be used to reimagine relations between humans and the more-than-human world. Questioning whose knowledge truly counts when acting in the forest’s best interest and what happens if we take nonhuman voices seriously?

Nonhuman Nonsense

Nonhuman Nonsense is een onderzoeksgericht kunst- en designcollectief dat werkt op het gebied van sociaal dromen en wereldvorming. De praktijk van het collectief richt zich op het niet-menselijke — dieren, objecten, ecologieën, technologieën en de verschijningen die bestaan tussen en voorbij vaste categorieën. Nonsense wordt benaderd als een tegengif voor “common sense,” waarbij paradox en speculatieve storytelling worden ingezet om de ethische en metafysische dimensies van relaties met de (niet-menselijke) wereld te onderzoeken. Het collectief creëert tegenstrijdige scenario’s en proposities, puttend uit en het zich toe-eigenen van ideeën uit wetenschap, informatica, recht en mythologie. Deze projecten nemen uiteenlopende vormen aan, waaronder interactieve installaties, workshops, korte films, publieke sculpturen, campagnes, chatbots en boeken. Gedreven door nieuwsgierigheid en compassie beschouwt Nonhuman Nonsense de scheiding tussen mens en niet-mens als onzin op zichzelf. Het collectief werkt regelmatig samen met andere wezens — wetenschappers, onderzoekers en vrienden — maar bestaat in de kern uit drie personen: Leo Fidjeland, Linnea Våglund en Filips Staņislavskis, gevestigd tussen Amsterdam, Stockholm en Dharamshala.
