IMPAKT presents critical and creative views on contemporary media culture and on innovative audio-visual arts in an interdisciplinary context.

What we do

A brief introduction to who we are: IMPAKT is a media arts organization based in Utrecht and founded in 1988. We present critical and creative views on contemporary media culture and arts, in an interdisciplinary context. Our aim is to identify emerging paradigms in transglobal culture, by focusing on the relationship between society, media, technology and arts. We examine issues around society, digital culture, and media from various angles and within a range of disciplines in the arts, academia, and technology.

We organise activities throughout the year at our venue at Lange Nieuwstraat 4, including IMPAKT Works, a residency programme, and IMPAKT Events, a regular series of presentations and screenings centering on a given theme, movement, or artist. The IMPAKT Channel is a platform where art projects made for the internet are presented, along with curated programmes featuring film and video art. Last but not least, the IMPAKT Archive works on digitising IMPAKT’s screening history back to 1988, when the first IMPAKT Festival was organised. Feel free to have a look.

Our main project is the annual IMPAKT Festival, a five-day multimedia event that includes exhibitions, film screenings, lectures, panels, performances, presentations, and artist talks at locations in Utrecht, the Netherlands.

The IMPAKT Festival 2019 took place from 30 October until 3 November. The festival exhibition “The Sound of One Computer Thinking” was on display from 30 October to 22 December.

IMPAKT offers internships in various shapes, durations and fields throughout the year. There’s no deadlines or fixed dates. We see the minimum of a fruitful work placement to be three months. Check the possibilities and our different internship profiles here.

Whether for studies (to obtain ECTs) or to gain professional experience, we are open to receive your application. Just fill out our questionnaire.

Programming is done by IMPAKT’s artistic leader and (guest) curators. This entails doing a lot of research and keeping in touch regularly with artists and other institutes in the field of audio-visual art and new media. Besides that, there is much to be organised if you want to realise a programme. As an intern you help the artistic and production team with their tasks. This varies from taking over practical things such as finding the location of works to communication with other parties and coordination of residencies. The internships in the production and programme department provide you with the opportunity to gain valuable experience in the world of arts and events and to build up a network. It will help build a notion of the process from concept, to the realisation of an event, festival programme or exhibition. At the same time, provided you take the opportunity, you will be able to see a lot of different works and thereby increase your frame of reference of film/video art.

Volunteers are vital for the IMPAKT festival. Do you want to help us to make this coming edition a success? We are looking for people who want to work in the run-up to, during and / or after the festival for assistance in building / break down, catering, drivers, stage managers, trainees, etc. We have full time functions, but also more flexible services.
