Enduring Freedom: The Opening Chapter
Klaus Obermeyer
(US 2005, 5:03 mins)
“In the year since the attacks of September 11, more than 80,000 men and women serving as Marines and Sailors have deployed outside the United States in the war against terrorism.”
This short film opens with the above sentence on screen, followed by different marines stating their oath to protect the United States’ constitution from “all enemies, both forgein and domestic.” This is quickly followed by footage of a plane flying into one of the Twin Towers. Posited as fighting for the future of Americans, and ending on footage of reunification of officers and their families, Obermeyer focuses on the emotional experiences of the armed forces, rather than the rationale behind the war they are fighting.
