On a quiet autumn evening in Tokyo, a man is trying to get a small bottle of tea from a machine, but instead he is treated to a small performance. For this work, which echoes Doug Aitken’s ‘Electric Earth’, Carsten Nicolai, who is also known as Alva Noto used a track of his album ‘Unitxt’ from 2008 Bio: CARSTEN NICOLAI (aka noto, alva noto) Born in 1965 in Karl-Marx-Stadt, East Germany, lives and works in Chemnitz and Berlin. In 1984 education as gardener. 1985–90 studies in Lanscape Design in Dresden. In 1992 co-founder of VOXXX – Kultur- und Kommunikationszentrum in Chemnitz. In 1994 launch of noton.archiv für ton und nichtton that merged with raster music to label raster-noton in 1999.  Known best as visual artist creating paintings, objects and installations shown in major international museum spaces like Schirn Kunsthalle in Frankfurt/Main, Neue Nationalgalerie in Belin, Haus Konstruktiv in Zurich,  SMAK in Ghent, as well as in major group exhibitions like documenta and Venice Biennial. Also published a number of highly regarded records under the pseudonyms noto and alva noto (a.o. with Ryuichi  Sakamoto, Ryoji Ikeda and Mika Vainio). Numerous live-performances in national and international concert halls, museums and club spaces. Received many prizes and stipends, o.a. Villa Massimo, Rome, Zurich Prize, Basel (both 2007), Villa Aurora, Los Angeles (2003), Golden Nica, Ars Electronica, Linz (2000/2001), F6-Philip Morris Graphik Preis, Dresden (1990).
