STIMULATE SURPRISE

DAN REES (UNITED KINGDOM 2015, 7:04 MINS)
Stimulate Surpise is a rebranding of a laverbread product by a New York advertising agency, Sid Lee. The product named “Bafa Lafwr” (laverbread in Welsh), provokes an exotic aura of Wales. Handmade marbled packaging simultaneously echoes imagery of the sea and the intricacy of seaweed farming techniques. With this ‘presentation deck’, Dan Rees tries “to persuade the majority of people to re-imagine something that they think of as ‘slime’ instead as a food that they should happily eat with their dinner.” Bio: Dan Rees (b. 1982 Swansea, U.K.) lives and works in London. Rees studied at the Staatliche Hochschule fur Bildende Künste Städelschule, Frankfurt am Main 2007-9, and graduated from Camberwell College of Arts, London in 2004.
