BEBAN & HORVATIC is a duo from Yougoslavia and has been making videos since 1985. While Bill Viola is one of the world’s most famous video artists, Beban & Horvatić are still relatively unknown in the Netherlands. Their work, however, is at least as pure and measured as that of Viola and leaves an unmistakable impression. Breda Beban, the female half of the duo, is originally a painter and performance artist. Hrvoje Horvatić works in television and directs films. In their joint productions, Breda Beban always acts in front of the camera while Hrvoje Horvatić fulfills his role behind the camera. The work of Beban & Horvatić bears a clear identity and is notable for its austerity and the singular presence of one image. Their videos attest to a strong spiritual bond with their natural environment and the cultural traditions as expressed in Byzantine art, for example. This results in hushed recordings and atmospheric, almost icon-like images that are sometimes reminiscent of Tarkovsky films, but still have their own identity.
