Yann Beauvais
(France, 1997, video, 12:24)
Beauvais confronts the viewer with an insistent stream of varying statements, facts and conclusions about the ways in which governments and societies live with AIDS. Facts and figures are presented as statistics, prejudices, misconceptions and government policy in the form of a rapid-fire sequence which demands utmost concentration. The soundtrack is comprised of personal stories which combine to create a true counterpoint to these unrelenting textual images. In a fragment from his film ‘Blue’, Derek Jarman relates the horror he felt when reading of the side-effects of his new medicine. David Wojnarowicz relates the suffering of a sick friend with similar emotional impact.
