Flicker Flutter

Julie Angel

(GB, 1997, video, 1:30)

The graphic qualities of the patterns on a butterfly’s wings are explored in this experimental, animated film. Image and sound convey the paradox of the butlertly as a beautiful, spiritual, delicate and harmless creature in contrast with a reality of violence, disappointment and manipulation. The image flickers constantly. A similar effect is created by a badly adjusted ‘butterfly gate’ in a film projector; only here the flickering is literal. When viewed through a magnifying glass, the butterfly wings change into abstract patterns.
