Matthew Barney is one of the most notorious and influential contemporary artists of the past decade. His ongoing Cremaster Cycle is shrouded in mystique and exclusivity. In the Netherlands, Barney is best known for his exhibition at Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen and for his performance March of the Anal Sadistic Warrior. For the first time in the Netherlands, Barney’s films will be shown together in a dedicated week-long screening at a movie theatre.

Barney’s work forms a dazzling constellation of symbolic imagery that invites — and resists — interpretation. His films are spectacles of decadence and formal perfection, in which conventional narrative structures dissolve. Alongside icons of American pop culture that assume prominent cinematic roles, the films frequently reference phenomena from medical and biological fields, culminating in explorations of the body, its sexuality, and its potential absence or transformation.

Cremaster 2 & Cremaster 5

Cremaster 2: is an aesthetic, hallucinatory spectacle centered on the murderer Gary Gilmore, a young man abused by his father who committed a double homicide in 1976. The role of the grandfather, who imagines himself to be Harry Houdini, is portrayed by writer Norman Mailer, whose novel The Executioner’s Song serves as an important source of inspiration for the film. Dave Lombardo, drummer of the heavy metal band Slayer, makes a striking surprise appearance.

Cremaster 5: is structured as an opera. Its lush, meticulously composed images create a form of symbolic cinema that evokes an intense, almost tactile sensuality. Ursula Andress — the iconic “Bond girl” from Dr. No — plays the Queen of Chain, a tragic and enigmatic figure within the film’s mythic universe.
