In her work, Femke Schaap often uses images from a collective memory. Though quite varied recollections and thus diverse values might be attached to these images, they are indeed familiar to everyone, thereby seducing the viewer to combine them into one’s own story. Another kind of universal memory is that of events we’ve “experienced” in films and TV series. The filmic recollections in “False Memories from Film #12-#17” can’t be clearly assigned; they’ve been transformed, and mixed with dream and reality. The memories this become more incomprehensible, yet also more real. They unwittingly determine and worldview.
