GARDEN (2002)
Kenny Macleod (Scotland)
The narrative structure of this work is linked to the layout of the landscape garden and the idea at the basis of this structure: the yearning for order and the will to impose logic and hierarchy on the chaos and dynamics of nature.
The various story lines in this work are connected with a sequence of stills picturing a walk through a landscape garden. The tone of the voice-over is absolute and assured as if it concerned factual background information accompanying a documentary. However, the voice constantly gives different information about the same facts. Every now and then, short scenes that seem to originate from another dimension interrupt the stream of images: a black dancer, sudden eruptions of violence and children that behave in a sexually provocative manner.
