Jacqueline Goss

How to Fix Reality

26 May 2005
19:00

Location: Voormalige Rechtbank
€15

Jacqueline Goss, media artist and professor of Media and Performing at the Massachusetts College of Art, presents her own work during this critically oriented evening. Goss’s fascination with Soviet politics is clearly evident in the films being shown.

She gives this theme a completely personal interpretation by focusing on the ways in which reality is represented, and on how people create new realities through language, cartography, diagrams, or images. “Representing reality means controlling it and possibly bending it to your will.” This notion lies at the heart of Goss’s video work.

In addition to her own work, Goss will also present various pieces by kindred artists such as Neil Goldberg, Jenny Perlin, Harald Hund & Paul Horn, and Owen Land. These artists, too, cast a critical eye on social spheres and on representation in general.

Literary scholar and Mediamatic editor Arie Altena will interview Jacqueline Goss during the presentation, while house chef Patrick Faas provides a matching three-course dinner with a Russian touch.

How to Fix the World

In the central film of the evening, How to Fix the World, she humorously contrasts the orally transmitted reality of farmers in Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan with the political idealism and progress-driven thinking of socialist “missionaries” involved in literacy projects.

There There Square

In her work There There Square, the map of America appears in many variations: cartographers, travelers, and saboteurs each have their own version.

The 100th Undone

The 100th Undone is Goss’s personal prehistory for the human clones of the future. The piece is a love letter to the individual in an era of genetic engineering and artificial reproduction.
