Jem Cohen

21 October 2005
20:00

Location: Moira
€7

The American filmmaker Jem Cohen is known for his enchantingly beautiful city portraits and his collaborations with bands such as Fugazi, The Ex, and R.E.M. The subjects of his films and the choice of bands he wishes to work with reveal a clear sense of social and political engagement. His films stand out for their exceptional eye for beauty and for the small moments of happiness or tragedy to be found in contemporary urban landscapes.

Cohen’s style is that of a contemporary, filmmaking flâneur, wandering through the world with an open eye for detail and accidental beauty. The influence of the German cultural philosopher Walter Benjamin is unmistakable.

For Impakt, Jem Cohen has curated an evening in which, alongside his own short films, he will also present work by artists such as Rob Smits and Britta Hosman, Luis Buñuel, and Sadie Benning. During several of Cohen’s films, Andy Moor (The Ex) and Colin McLean will provide live music. Chris Keulemans will interview Jem Cohen during the presentation.
