INNER WORLD OUTER SPACE
This diptych shows how pop stars (re)create themselves and the universe in their music videos. The standard ‘performative’ music video is or appears to be autobiographical at first sight, showing the pop star or the band singing and performing in a suitable environment.
This format can be used however to play a challenging game with characters and personalities. Thus, the musicians (or their directors) can create new, parallel and multiple identities. Artists with more of an outward approach focus on our society, the world and the universe. They redesign space, history and evolution, while analysing our current state of being in ambitious high tech realities or in lo-fi futurist fantasies that are simultaneously charming and clumsy. The program features music videos by The White Stripes, Underworld, Chicks on Speed, Fatboy Slim and The Residents, to name but a few. It has been compiled by Jessica Manstetten.
