Erik van Lieshout
Erik van Lieshout is one of the leading young Dutch artists of the moment. His style of drawing and painting is characterised by vehemence, and the same goes for his videos and installations. Urban subcultures form Van Lieshout ́s source of inspiration for his works. He derives his imagery from his direct environment, from magazines, comics or from the street. He submits it to his own idiosyncratic and raw idiom. With his sharp perceptivity, Van Lieshout analyses everyday reality in our confusing times and subjects it to his snide comments. In recent years, van Lieshout has begun to direct his camera more and more at himself. The video installation UP! is a case in point. Persistent symptoms of depression caused him to end up in a series of therapeutic treatments. The video camera is a silent witness to all these sessions, but also serves as a ‘mirror’, as a means of reflection.
For this Impakt Event, Erik van Lieshout compiles a film program that features his new work ROCK and some other of his videos. He will also screen works by other artists that currently inspire and occupy him.
During the presentation, Erik van Lieshout will be interviewed about his work and his choice of films by Rein Wolfs, the head of presentations at the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen Rotterdam.
