Among Performers and Seagulls

Presentation by Ania Molska and Krzysztof Franaszek

24 February 2009
19:00

Location: Filmtheater ‘t Hoogt
Entrance: €8 (or €7 CJP/U-pas, 65+, student)

Ania Molska (Poland, 1983) only recently entered the world of arts, yet her arrival was immediately widely recognized. She was the big revelation of last year’s 5th Biennale in Berlin where she showed two of her most recent video works, W=F*s(work) and P=W:t(power), at Kunst-Werke, the Berlin institute for contemporary art. Impakt invited Molska for a two months’ residency program in Utrecht. You can read more about her residency here.

Molska studied at the Academy of Fine Arts, Warsaw. During her study, Molska mainly focused on new media studies. Molska’s work, on the one hand, expresses involvement with the outside world. She, for example, takes laborers as the subject of her films. On the other hand, Molska experiments with the avant-garde language of images by putting film images in an alienating context resulting in a two-dimensional abstraction.

During her residency at Impakt, Molska organized a workshop with fellow artist Krzysztof Franaszek. For this workshop they invited young artists and students at the Utrecht School of Arts. The activities carried out during the workshop have been documented by Molska and Franaszek. With this concept, Molska appears to follow the line of her earlier work, to wit, the filming of working people. At this Impakt Event, Molska will present an entirely new video work based on the material documented at the workshop. In addition, Molska will be interviewed in relation to her recent work. The following works by Molska will be shown: W=F*s(work) (2008), P=W:t(power) (2008), OWOW11 (2007) en Tanagram (2007). Also she will show documenation of an excercise by Grzegorz Kowalski, the Polish artist who used to be Molska’s professor as well as the professor of Artur Zmijewski, Pawel Althamer and Katarzyna Kozyra at the Warsaw art academy.
