Workshop presentation //

Can we grow kelp and oysters in the fight against climate change? In this scenario design workshop you will investigate marine permaculture as a strategy to transform obsolete offshore platforms in the North Sea. Oil production platforms will be redesigned to become sites for ecologically sustainable food forests for effective carbon absorption, providing living space for marine species as well as humans.

You will work together with other artists, designers, architects and experts in a series of three workshops. The first workshop investigates existing and emerging technologies, financial and political developments in the field of marine permaculture and repurposing fossil-fuel infrastructure. The second session will look at the processes of (de)constructing the necessary infrastructure and how this can be linked to ecological transition. In the final session we focus on the farther-reaching implications, effects and systemic consequences of this transformation.

This workshop is part of the Zoöp Project: a new cooperative organisation for representing and cooperating with non-human ecological communities. The workshop is developed by Sjef van Gaalen (Structure and Narrative) and Klaas Kuitenbrouwer (Researcher at Het Nieuwe Instituut).
