'Social Distancing – Virtual Bonding' at CIVA Festival 2021

From wildlife live streams, the iconic Windows XP Bliss wallpaper, to the afterlife of animals on the internet, nature is just a click away. Overly saturated and in full HD, or pixelated and lagging live streams, what kind of new meanings are formed in these nature representations and simulations? Networked image culture brings us closer to faraway landscapes, yet creating new distances to be bridged. More than found footage of pristine wilderness, the nature image is socially and technologically constructed. Bringing together artistic and discursive perspectives, you’re invited to experience nature safely behind the glass of your computer screens.

‘When I Look Through My Browser Window I Can Feel the Fresh Air’ is an online discourse programme on February 25th, curated by Marijn Bril as part of Vienna’s New Media Arts Festival, CIVA Festival. Through video essays, a workshop, a guided walk, and a panel discussion the programme asks how nature is mediated by the computer screen.

Artists involved in the programme: Jean Baptiste Castel, Astrid Feringa, Salvador Miranda, Benjamin Earl, Deborah Mora, Sylke van der Heiden, and Anna Fink.

Marijn Bril

― Curator

Marijn Bril is a Rotterdam-based media designer, researcher, and curator. With an interest in digital culture in all its complexity and foolishness, she explores topics ranging from networked images, technological mediation, to digital metaphors. She reflects upon these predominantly through writing, video, and curation. Marijn graduated from Design Academy Eindhoven in the department Media & Culture and studied Media Studies at Maastricht University. Her work has been presented at Dutch Design Week, the Wrong Biennale, 60 Seconds Festival, PloktaTV, and her writing published at Institute of Network Cultures. For CIVA Festival she recently curated the online programme ‘When I Look Through My Browser Window I Can Feel the Fresh Air’, reflecting on increasingly digitally mediated nature. http://marijnbril.work/
