This extra-full IMPAKT TV episode starts with a conversation with filmmakers Shelly Silver and Mike Hoolboom about their films in the preceding screening programme Brief Encounters, Long Farewell.

In the second part, we bring you the film The Stroker (2018) by Pilvi Takala. In The Stroker Pilvi Takala analyses working conditions and norms in open-space environments and raises the question of healthy, safe and well-adapted work environments. This video is based on Takala’s two week-long intervention at Second Home, a trendy East London coworking space for young entrepreneurs and start-ups.

After the screening we will have a live conversation with Angelique Spaninks, curator and director of MU Hybrid Art House. She will be speaking about hybrid spaces in the context of the festival.

Shelly Silver

Shelly Silver is a New York based artist working with the still and moving image. Her work explores contested territories between public and private, narrative and documentary, and--increasingly in recent years--the watcher and the watched.

Mike Hoolboom

― Artist

Mike HOOLBOOM (1959, Canada) began as a filmmaker with his father's Super-8 camera at a young age. He explored many experimental film strategies and eventually established his name with the short film White Museum (1986). Hoolboom worked as artistic director of the Images Festival and experimental film coordinator at the Canadian Filmmakers Distribution Centre. His 2015 short movie Scrapbook won Best Short Film at the Edinburgh International Film Festival. In 2017, he received a Governor General's Award in Visual and Media Arts.

Angelique Spaninks

― Curator

Angelique Spaninks is director and curator at MU Hybrid Art House, Eindhoven. She was director and artistic manager at STRP Festival from 2012 to 2018 and international curator for the 6th Guangzhou Triennial in 2018.

Pilvi Takala

― Artist

Pilvi Takala is an artist living and working between Berlin and Helsinki. Her video works are based on performative interventions in which she researches specific communities in order to process social structures and question the normative rules and truths of our behaviour. Her works show that it is often possible to learn about the implicit rules of a social situation only by its disruption. Takala will represent Finland at the Venice Biennale, 2022.

Friso Wiersum

― Moderator

Friso Wiersum (1976) is a program maker, moderator and connector. Friso works as project manager communications at the European Cultural Foundation. He also is a member of Expodium, an urban do tank which curates, teaches and publishes on art and the city. He sometimes reviews books, is a member of a dj collective, rides his bicycle and plays baseball.
