Linda Duits

Linda Duits is a social scientist specialized in popular culture, gender and sexuality. She is a geek and podcast creator (Onder Mediadoctoren, Geeky Dingen), and affiliated with the Institute for Cultural Inquiry (ICON) of Utrecht University.

Dries Verhoeven

― Artist

Dries Verhoeven (1976 Oosterhout, the Netherlands) is a theatre maker and visual artist. Dries Verhoeven creates installations, performances and happenings in museums, on location and in the public spaces of cities. On the boundary between performance and installation art, he critically evaluates the relationships between the spectators, performers, everyday reality and art. The spectator is directly involved in the work or given the opportunity to steer his or her own experiences. The work by Dries Verhoeven was shown in international festivals, such as Wiener Festwochen, LIFT (London) and Festival Transamérique (Montreal). He has received various prizes including the Mont Blanc Young Directors Award at the Salzburger Festspiele. He has worked with HAU Hebbel am Ufer Berljn, Battersea Arts Centre London, and the Münchner Kammerspiele, among others. Many works were seen at SPRING, and the former Festival a/d Werf, Utrecht. The Municipality of Utrecht and the Dutch Performing Arts Fund provide continuous support for Verhoeven’s studio. Dries Verhoeven resides in Berlin and Amsterdam.

Kelli van der Waals

Kelli van der Waals (1984) is a journalist. She writes for Vrij Nederland and De Volkskrant about the role of technology in our lives and has a weekly column in Trouw. In 2018 she was awarded a Mercur Award for Best Report. In het book Picture Perfect, she writes about the public life of today's teenagers – the 'smartphone generation'. Her new book Cold Water: How to live in the Digital Age will be published during the IMPAKT Festival 2021. The book is a reflection on the way the internet and social media influence our daily lives, from cold water swimmers and housing minimalists to Swap cyclists and conspiracy-thinking influencers.

Lilian Stolk

― Speaker

Lilian Stolk is director of The Hmm, a platform for internet culture, and emoji expert. She cares about understanding the Internet and has a special focus on internet languages and the rise of image-based communication. She published Het zonderwoorden-boek (2018) about her research on emoji and launched the app Emoji Voter (2019) to democratise emoji. Besides that she is a public speaker, writer and programmer of events.

Friso Wiersum

― Moderator

Friso Wiersum (1976) is a program maker, moderator and connector. Friso works as project manager communications at the European Cultural Foundation. He also is a member of Expodium, an urban do tank which curates, teaches and publishes on art and the city. He sometimes reviews books, is a member of a dj collective, rides his bicycle and plays baseball.
