This IMPAKT TV episode follows the screening programme Brief Encounters, Long Farewell, which brings together two films that centre on the human need and quest for intimacy. The filmmakers Shelly Silver (What Am I Looking For, 2004) and Mike Hoolboom (27 Thoughts About My Dad, 2019) will join us for a live Q&A. Shelly Silver

― Artist

Shelly Silver is a New York based artist working with the still and moving image. Her work explores contested territories between public and private, narrative and documentary, and--increasingly in recent years--the watcher and the watched.

Mike Hoolboom

― Artist

Mike HOOLBOOM (1959, Canada) began as a filmmaker with his father's Super-8 camera at a young age. He explored many experimental film strategies and eventually established his name with the short film White Museum (1986). Hoolboom worked as artistic director of the Images Festival and experimental film coordinator at the Canadian Filmmakers Distribution Centre. His 2015 short movie Scrapbook won Best Short Film at the Edinburgh International Film Festival. In 2017, he received a Governor General's Award in Visual and Media Arts.

Michelle Franke

― Moderator

Michelle graduated cum laude from the Research Master Art and Visual Culture at the Radboud University, Nijmegen, the Netherlands. She was selected for the Young Excellent Scholar Research Programme at CEDLA (Centre for Latin American Research and Documentation). Since 2020 she works as head of PR at IMPAKT [Centre for Media Culture].
