Bart Rutten

Bart Rutten is artistic director of the Centraal Museum Utrecht. He was previously the head of collections at the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam and the Netherlands Media Art Institute.

Johan Grimonprez

― Artist

Johan Grimonprez (Belgium, 1962) studied at the School of Visual Arts and attended the Whitney Museum Independent Study Program in New York. Grimonprez's work dances on the borders of practice and theory, art and cinema, documentary and fiction, demanding a double take on the part of the viewer. Informed by an archaeology of present-day media, his work seeks out the tension between the intimate and the bigger picture of globalization. It questions our contemporary sublime, framed by a fear industry that has infected political and social dialogue. By suggesting new narratives through which to tell a story, his work emphasises a multiplicity of histories and realities. He achieved international acclaim with his film essay dial H-I-S-T-O-R-Y at Documenta X in Kassel, Germany, in 1997, which eerily foreshadowed the tragic events of September 11th in New York. His films have been included in prestigious film festivals around the globe, including New York, Edinburgh, Telluride, Los Angeles, Rio de Janeiro, Tokyo and Berlin.

Chris Keulemans

Chris Keulemans (b. 1960) is a writer, journalist, moderator and educator. Born in Tunis, Keulemans grew up in Baghdad, Iraq. He has been involved in numerous events at Framer Framed, often as a writer, host and moderator. In fact, Chris Keulemans was one of the founders of the Tolhuistuin in Amsterdam, the previous location of Framer Framed, and fulfilled the role at the Tolhuistuin as Artistic Director until 2014. For his work he received the honorary pin of the city council. The city of Amsterdam praised him for his work for the city in recent years. For the next two years Keulemans will be appointed as the district-chroniquer of the Northern part of town. He also founded the literary bookshop Perdu in Amsterdam in 1984. Additionally, during the nineties he worked at De Balie, Centre for culture and politics in Amsterdam, first as a curator, then later as director. He has published books, fiction and nonfiction, and has published numerous articles on art, social movements, migration, music, cinema and war for national newspapers. He has written essays for publications by Jonas Staal, Lidwien van de Ven, Anna Tilroe, Gert Urhahn, Fiona Tan and the exhibition The Unwanted Land (2009). He traveled extensively to study art after a crisis in cities such as Beirut, Jakarta, Algiers, Prishtina, Sarajevo, Tirana, New York, New Orleans and Ramallah, where he visited many talented artists.
