IMPAKT @ NFF Extended x STRP: Hybrid Spaces

Nieuwe doelgroepen bereiken met hybride formats

7 April 2022
12:00 — 14:00

Location: Pullman Hotel Eindhoven

How can the combination of online and offline worlds help us reach new audiences? On April 7, we will try to answer this question during NFF Extended: Hybrid Spaces, an event in collaboration with the Dutch Film Festival of the IDFA DocLab and STRP Festival in Eindhoven.

Makers, artists, festivals and programmers have been inspired by lockdowns and remote contact to find new ways to reach their audiences with their work and programmes. Not only the pandemic, but also the pursuit of sustainability and a smaller carbon footprint have been the catalyst for numerous hybrid experiments using original and surprising formats combining online and offline, physical and remote, and live and pre-recorded. The result: new collaborations and creative solutions, which you will hear more about during NFF Extended: Hybrid Spaces.

As moderator, the acclaimed storyteller and VR maker Abner Preis will take a close look at the most innovative examples. What opportunities have been discovered and where have things gone horribly wrong? And what problems have been encountered during development and execution?

With: storyteller Karen Palmer, artist Natalie Dixon (affect lab), Arjon Dunnewind (director IMPAKT) and Caspar Sonnen on behalf of IDFA DocLab.

This program is part of NFF Extended and is a collaboration between IMPAKT, NFF, STRP Festival and IDFA DocLab. The event is freely accessible upon registration.

About the speakers

Storyteller Karen Palmer will – live from Jamaica – explain in the keynote speech how hybrid thinking broadens your horizons. In her immersive film experiences, assisted by artificial intelligence and facial recognition you become aware of your own unconscious behaviour. Palmer will share what she has learned about hybrid thinking and its necessity for the future in her project Hack the Future Lab.

Natalie Dixon of affect lab will talk about Toolkit For The Inbetween, a project in collaboration with MU Hybrid Art House and The Hmm. They experiment with hybrid art and programmes to explore meaningful interactions between physical and online audiences. The topics are accessibility, low tech, alternative narratives and audio-only hybrid.

Arjon Dunnewind of IMPAKT will discuss his organisation’s developments in participatory livecasting. How do you create hybrid and sustainable social spaces where offline and online participants and visitors can meet and interact naturally? IMPAKT is part of two different coalitions that include the Institute of Network Cultures, Framer Framed and Hackers & Designers.

Caspar Sonnen will speak on behalf of IDFA DocLab about best practices for hybrid platforms and new exhibition forms. IDFA DocLab has been exploring new forms of storytelling through interactive and immersive non-fiction art since 2007, for example by commissioning new works and initiating international collaborations.

Moderator Abner Preis is a multimedia artist who uses augmented reality, virtual reality, performance and video art to tell stories in simple and accessible ways. His work ranges from private commissions to museum installations.
