Part of Don’t Be Evil

Installation with obfuscator disguised as a charger, phone and boxes

FANGo is a weapon of defence against surveillance capitalism. Disguised as a mobile phone charger, the device takes control of the smartphone that is plugged into it. FANGo submits queries to Google and other search engines, feeds Amazon and Netflix with random data, and launches videos on YouTube – all in order to deceive the data brokers and disrupt their data-capturing processes.

FANG stands for Facebook, Amazon, Netflix and Google, the most important and highest performing NASDAQ companies. They were also the pioneers of what we know today as surveillance capitalism.

This work was realised within the framework of a European Media Art Platform residency program at Onassis Stegi with support from the Creative Europe Culture Programme of the European Union
