Soul Paint

Monobanda (2024)

SOUL PAINT exists at the nexus of immersive technology, creative storytelling and wellbeing to explore the richness of the embodied human experience. Narrated by actor and activist, Rosario Dawson, audiences are taken on an embodied journey to explore and creatively express feelings of emotion and sensations in the body. 

Through the process of bodymapping, 3D drawing and movement, they are invited to reveal their unique inner reality and then observe the creations of others. Using virtual reality technology in a genre-pushing way, this experience encourages new forms of embodied insight, allowing us to reflect on the diversity of human experience on an individual and global level.

Monobanda is an award winning studio that explores and expands the boundaries of play and interaction. Their projects connect the human body, physical space and the virtual world in surprising ways, creating new forms of meaningful play that find their way into art, science and education. Their core aesthetic is ‘play’. A state of being that all humans share, and facilitates our best traits, like creativity, communication, motivation and self confidence. Inspired by the social interactions that are found on a playground or in a sandbox, where creativity and imagination run free, they make projects that inhabit the space between the virtual and physical world. This means they always create experiences where people discover something new about themselves through playful behavior. Something that is always both personal and totally universal. They work in hybrid teams where our art is informed, and co-created by scientists, psychologists, care professionals and other experts on the broad spectrum of human experience. Their work ranges from (VR) Games, art installations to workshops and mental healthcare interventions. Play is everywhere after all.

Niki Smit

Niki Smit is an award winning Immersive artist. Being one of the frontrunners of playful interactive media, he has been making, exhibiting and collaborating playful interactive experiences since 2008. From 2015 onwards al his projects are made in close collaboration with scientists and psychologists. He is co-founder / creative Director at Monobanda, where he explores and expands the boundaries of play and embodied interaction. Additionally, he co-founded ExploreDEEP, where he creates meditative, breath controlled VR experiences. With a background in Game design and Theatre, his work focuses heavily on researching and developing new forms of play. His passion lies in creating projects that connect the human body, physical space and the virtual world in surprising ways, creating meaningful play that fills the space between art, science and education.

Simon van der Linden

With a background in both Pedagogic Education and Art Simon van der Linden’s goal is to use interactive art in a way that has a positive impact on society. After graduating the High School of Arts in Utrecht (HKU) Simon co-founded Monobanda with the goal to create new forms of PLAY. Simon focused on combining the tangible and ephemeral qualities of theatre with the interactive magic you can create with video games. Influenced by his social background he has a passion to make his games as accessible as possible for everybody. Some characteristic design rules that are shared in all his works are the complete absence of written text, and a tangible connection between the physical and digital world. Projects he worked on include an interactive sandpit(project Mimicry), an interactive table for people with dementia and autism (Tovertafel) and a VR game that you control with your primal voice(Timbre). To share his way of thinking Simon created his own personal workshop for the Art Academic in Utrecht, to stimulate students to work together in a creative process by using playdough and Google Sketchup.

Sarah Ticho

― Artist

Sarah Ticho is transdisciplinary artist, activist, producer and death doula. She develops boundary breaking projects at the intersection of art, health and immersive technology including Soul Paint & Explore Deep. She is an advocate for the adoption of XR in health in her role at the XR Health Alliance and is the recipient of the IVRHA Hero Award.
