Part of In Touch

#SOPHYGRAY – A Feminist Voice Chat Bot

Nadja Verena Marcin in Collaboration With Alex Stachowiak

2022, Installation, projection and library

How do we talk to our devices? And how does this communication affect the power structures within our society? #SOPHYGRAY challenges assumptions about virtual assistants (e.g. Alexa, or Siri). More specifically, the work questions the typically feminine and submissive voices of these assistants, and how these reflect the objectification within gendered technologies. This way, the work shows how stereotypes, gender roles and power hierarchies are reinforced by these assistants. Luckily, it’s not too late. When you talk to SOPHY, you train them, shape them, and teach them new knowledge. Press the button and ask #SOPHYGRAY a question.

#SOPHYGRAY is made possible by EMAP/EMARE residency at Onassis Stegi as part of the European Media Art Platform (EMAP) residency program, which is co-funded by the European Union. Other support came from the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of the Office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature, the Ministry of Culture North Rhine-Westphalia, NEUSTART KULTUR by the German Federal Culture Commissioner, Stiftung Kunstfonds in Bonn as well as sponsored by IT company Novatec. The artwork is fiscally sponsored by the New York Foundation for the Arts.
