Researcher, publicist and author Evgeny Morozov, renowned for his books The Net Delusion and To Save Everything, studies the social and political consequences of new technologies and the internet. Morozov will be interviewed by Mirko Tobias Schäfer and take questions from the audience.

Many tech companies pretend that their products contribute to a just and equal society. They offer ‘free’ services, in exchange for our data. But what are the economical, political and social consequences of these seemingly beneficial deals? And why do our governments go along with plans coming out of Silicon Valley? Internet skeptic Evgeny Morozov (Belarus, 1984) will present his view on the promises made by tech companies and the hardly critical attitude of governments in these issues.

Mirko Tobias Schäfer is Assistant Professor for New Media & Digital Culture at the University of Utrecht and director of the Utrecht Data School. Mirko studied theater, film and media studies and communication studies at Vienna University (A) and digital culture at Utrecht University (NL). He obtained a magister (master) in theater, film and media studies from the University of Vienna in 2002, and a PhD from Utrecht University in 2008. Currently he is a postdoctoral research fellow at the Centre for Humanities at Utrecht University. Mirko’s research interest revolves around the socio- political impact of media technology. His publications cover user participation in cultural production, hacking communities, politics of software design and communication in social media.
