RHYTHMS OF OUR LABOUR: MUSIC, WORK AND CAPITALISM

1 November 2013
19:00

Location: Theater Kikker

This musical presentation of Marek Korczynski (Professor of Sociology of Work at the University of Nottingham, UK) will examine the fractured relationship between popular music and work, with a focus of how structures of capitalism have affected the meaning and role of music in the workplace. Whether for weavers at the handloom or factory workers on the assembly line, music has often been a key texture in people’s working lives. A musical journey from the singing cultures of pre-industrial occupations, to the impact and uses of the factory radio.
