In this new audio-visual performance, based on the large light installation Totem, the dynamic light visions of Moholy-Nagy meet the algorithms of artificial life. Salter and Saunier use custom sensor-based instruments in collaboration with neural networks used in Totem to create surprising luminous/sonic actions.

Chris Salter is an artist, Professor of Computation Arts at Concordia University in Montreal and Co-Director of the Hexagram network for Research-Creation in Media Arts, Design, Technology and Digital Culture. Salter’s performances, installations, research and publications have been presented at numerous festivals, exhibition and conferences around the world. He is the author of Entangled (2010) and Alien Agency (2015) both from MIT Press. He was creative consultant for the Barbican Centre in London. His new book project on machine and human sensing will appear from MIT Press in 2020.

Alexandre Saunier

Alexandre Saunier is an artist and doctoral researcher at Concordia University in Montreal. He conceives of light as a dynamic and temporal medium that ecstatically transforms its environment and alters our perception. His interdisciplinary practice brings together light art and digital craft with a particular interest in the relation between digital processes and human senses. He holds a master in sound design from the ENS Louis Lumi??re (Paris) and engaged in research in design at the ENS Arts Décoratifs (Paris). His work and research has been presented in various international venues such as Art Electronica, Toronto's Nuit Blanche, Exit festival.
