Anne Helmond

Anne Helmond is assistant professor in New Media and Digital Culture at the University of Amsterdam and wrote her dissertation entitled “The web as platform: data flows in social media.” Her research interests include software studies, platform studies, infrastructure studies, digital methods, and web history. In her dissertation she examines the platformization of the web which entails the extension of social media platforms into the rest of the web and their drive to make external web data “platform ready.” More on Anne Helmond’s work on her website.

Fernando van der Vlist

Fernando van der Vlist is a researcher in the field of study of New Media and Digital Culture, a lecturer with the Department of Media Studies at the University of Amsterdam, and a concept-driven information designer. His research explores the various relationships between software and digital media technologies and the social and cultural formations, rationales, and practices they are entangled in. He has a specific interest in the social, cultural, and political significance of calculation (understood widely as mechanical reasoning) and the different forms of work, thinking, and doing associated with it.

Kristoffer Gansing

Kristoffer Gansing is since 2012 the artistic director of transmediale, festival for art and digital culture in Berlin. As a curator and researcher he is interested in the intersections of media, art and activism. He is co-founder of The Art of the Overhead (2005) festival and 2007-2010 was an editorial board member of artist-run channel tv-tv in Copenhagen. Between 2001-11, he taught the theory and practice of new media at the K3, School of Arts and Communication, Malmö University. In 2013 he completed his PhD thesis, entitled Transversal Media Practices, a study dealing with media archaeology, art and technological development.

Klaas Kuitenbrouwer

Klaas Kuitenbrouwer teaches, writes and gives lectures on different aspects of interactive media and various crossroads of culture and technology. He plays improvised music and develops sonic games in OORBEEK. Since 2009 he works at the Virtual Platform, and develops crossover programs to share useful knowledge and clever practices between people from different flavours of electronic culture. From 1999 till 2008 he has been developing, assembling and coaching workshops for Mediamatic – in which participants together with invited makers and thinkers develop concepts and applications of current (media) technologies. Kuitenbrouwer studied Contemporary History at the University of Utrecht, became an artist for a while, and as such he mainly made radio, interactive theatrical installations, and performed improvised music and texts.
