Don’t Say You Didn’t Know
With Roee Rosen, Umayya Abu-Hanna, Pascal Gielen and others
The art world has long provided a safe space to express challenging, controversial, and conflicting ideas. Now, the safety of that space is being threatened by those unwilling to even entertain opposing ideas. Worse still, many organisations that make up that space are hiding behind a mask of neutrality.
With large sections of the Dutch political right pushing for the unconditional support of Israel, major Dutch museums and cultural institutions have chosen to stay silent in an effort to appear neutral. Coupled with Israel’s aggression towards those who criticise its violent actions, this trend of silence has made cultural institutions and public events increasingly unsafe for artists who wish to condemn the war in Gaza.
In light of this development, we want to examine what neutrality means. Is avoiding conversation and confrontation itself a form of violence? At what point are we obliged to take a non-neutral stance on any given matter? And how can cultural institutions ensure the safety of those wishing to express their views on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict?
With Roee Rosen, Umayya Abu-Hanna, Pascal Gielen, and moderated by Maria Hlavajova.
