REINVENTING MANHOOD
With Babah Tarawally, Mary Maggic, Mounir Samuel and Linda Duits
Masculinity and the patriarchy are under assault. The debate around what it means to be a man concerns women and non-binary people as much as it does men. As well as the behaviour of individual men, we need to examine the systemic character of the patriarchy. Toxic masculinity is symptomatic of a system that has suppressed women and their sexuality for centuries. The established order through which males are assigned countless privileges at birth has had its day. At the same time, however, phenomena such as the emergence of the ‘trad wives’ movement and the popularity of influencers such as Andrew Tate prove how intractable the patriarchy is.
In REINVENTING MANHOOD we turn our attention to countries where the oppression of women takes on violent forms, and to cultures whose sham displays of equality don’t stand up to close examination – there is still much progress to be made. What does the notion of ‘manhood’ mean now that the clear and immutable boundaries between the genders are giving way to a fluid spectrum of genitalia and gender identities? Can we collectively reinvent masculinity? What would this accomplish, and whom would it benefit? Would it be an additional burden or a potential liberation?
