There is a growing field of research looking at how websites, software and mobile devices can be used to change people’s behavior. Is this pure hype? Even if it were 100% marketing, what would happen if these models are implemented in cities, homes and websites?
Steven Scholte
― SpeakerDr. H. Steven Scholte (1975, Amstelveen) is associate professor of cognitive neuroscience at Amsterdam University. He studied biology (MSc), psychology (MA) and philosophy and obtained his PhD in medical physics. He has published on topics such as visual perception, attention, synesthesia, trust, decision making, the formation of fear memory, controlled vs automatic processing, sexuality, dyslexia, autism and ADHD. Recently his work has shifted towards computational models of cognition and visual perception and the philosophy of science. This has so far resulted in publications on multi-task deep learning and how to use machine learning in brain research. He has published in journals such as Nature Neuroscience, PNAS, brain and Plos Computational Biology. He is also the CEO of a market research company (Neurensics) that specialises in consumer neuroscience.
Fieke Jansen
― SpeakerFieke Jansen is a PhD candidate at the data justice lab at Cardiff University, where her research focuses on the impact of the implementation of data-driven decision making by European police forces vis-a-vis marginal communities. Prior to starting her PhD, Jansen worked on issues related to digital security, responsible data management, privacy and human rights for the Berlin-bases NGO Tactical Tech, and the Dutch development organization Hivos.
Lídia Pereira
― SpeakerLídia Pereira is an independent designer and researcher based in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. She is the founding editor of the Pervasive Labour Union zine, a publication focusing on the political economy of the Internet, algorithmic governance and labour in and around corporate social networks.
Nadine Roestenburg
― ModeratorNadine Roestenburg is a researcher and curator interested in the influence of digital technology and the internet on art, culture and society. She studies post-digital cultures and focuses on relations between wellbeing and the internet, and reflections emerging from the contemporary arts. This research is based at Fontys University of Applied Sciences, within the Fontys-broad interdisciplinary research theme Creative Economy. It is a collaboration with the University of Amsterdam where Nadine is also a PhD candidate in post-digital artistic discourses and artistic practices. Nadine has worked at art space MU in Eindhoven, where she has co-curated the exhibitions 'Materialising the Internet' (2017), and 'The New Newsroom' (2018). Before, she worked for STRP Biënnale, the Institute of Network Cultures (Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences), Dutch Design Week, and Museum De Pont. In 2017, her book ‘Van meme tot mainstream’ was published.
