The Secret Life Of Technology

How will technology change our lives in the near and distant future? Trans-humanists dream of a technological Nirvana, while sceptics fear a world in which people will be reduced to an insignificant part of a digital world brain. With Tobias Revell, designer and researcher of techno-political relations inhistorical, social and economic systems and future perspectives; Stéphane Degoutin of World Brain, a film and web project on the architecture of data centres, the collective intelligence of kittens, high-frequency trading and the laws of the jungle in the Wikipedia age; and Australian sound artist Gail Priest, who presents her installation Sounding the Future and explains how trans-humanism and the writings of Anne Leckie, William Gibson, Philip K. Dick influence her work.

Tobias Revell

Tobias Revell is an artist and designer. He is Senior Lecturer in Critical and Digital Design at the London College of Communication, UAL. He is a co-founder of research consultancy Strange Telemetry and one-half of research project Haunted Machines. He is a Ph.D. candidate in design at Goldsmiths.

Stéphane Degoutin

Stéphane Degoutin is an artist, writer and researcher, born in Toronto, Canada. He lives and works in Paris. His main research interests are mankind after man, architecture after pleasure and the Umwelt of data. His projects focus on ambivalent situations, between war and dance, sexual pleasure and nonplaces, the city and its potential, posthuman theories and the obsolescence of mankind. He creates films, video and sound installations, theoretical texts, places, such as Mute, Empty and Cyborgs in the Mist, or the photoblog Lost in Créteil. He created the online installations Googlehouse and What Are You?, and the temporary massage structure Here is Where We Meet. He co-founded the Terrorism Museum and the collective Nogo Voyages.

Gail Priest

― Artist

Gail Priest is a Sydney-based artist with a multi-faceted practice in which sound is the key material of communication and investigation. Her work spans soundtracks for dance, theatre and video, solo electro-acoustic performance as well sound installations. In 2015-16 she has been awarded an Emerging & Experimental Arts Fellowship from the Australia Council to produce a body of work titled Sounding the Future. The first iteration was exhibited at Move.On, Werkleitz Festival 2015, developed through an EMAN/EMARE residency at Bandits-Mages, France. She is also a curator of concerts and exhibitions and writes extensively about sound and media arts for the Australian magazine RealTime. www.gailpriest.net

Michelle Kasprzak is a curator, writer, and scholar. Currently she is a PhD candidate at the University of Porto (Faculty of Engineering) and Madeira Interactive Technologies Institute under the supervision of Chris Csikszentmihalyi. http://michelle.kasprzak.ca
