Political, ideological or religious authority can face collective resistance which questions the concept of what is right. But resistance can also consist of a personal gesture. Sometimes within society’s order, sometimes on its margins and sometimes even outside society.

Presuda, Ðuro Gavran (Croatia 2013 | 11:20 min)
Sixteen years after the war, a few thousand people gather in Zagreb to watch the Tribunal’s verdict against Croatian generals. A close-up of individual and shared emotions the verdict elicits.

This Lemon Tastes of Apple, Hiwa K (Iraq 2011 | 06:15 min)
Survivors of the massive gas attack in Northern Iraq in 1988 say the deadly chemicals smelled of apple. During the Arab uprisings, also taking place in the Kurdish region of Northern Iraq in 2011, civilian protest was bloodily repressed. The unrest saw the large- scale use of teargas. The protestors used lemons to counter its effects; another fruit smell which linked the citizens’ political memories. Hiwa K initiated a musical intervention to the melody of Morricone’s ‘Once upon a time in the West’.

Visiting Joint Surveillance Area, Tae Eun Kim (South Korea | 05:55 min)
The Korean film Joint Security Area (2000) was shot in the deserted village of Panmunjeom in the demilitarized zone on the border between North and South Korea. In this split-screen, Tae Eun Kim places the cinematic version next to the real life, where the town has become a tourist mecca. It reveals the relationship between localised tension, reality and the distortion thereof.

Coffins, Kelman Duran and Hyesung Moon (us 2012 | 19:06 min)
Even when removed from civilisation, man can- not escape capitalism’s structures. A portrait of a difficult position outside society.

A Holy Order, Ben Fain (US 2012 | 19:34 min)
Locations: a family-oriented parade in Chicago; Facebook; an ambulance and a car wash. An absurdist collage of bizarre interventions against the much loved, determinative structures of faith, conservatism and capitalism in the USA.

The Amateur Scientist, Tom Sherman (Canada 2012 | 05:53 min)
Conspiracy theories about the government suppressing scientific information leads an amateur to conduct old-fashioned, empirical research. The consequences for his health may be severe; he accepts it as a martyr.
