Curriculum Veto
Noa Marthe Prins
Curriculum Veto is a theatre performance developed by Noa Marthe Prins, that takes as its starting point the CV: the ultimate, universally recognised, individualised standard that conditions labour. An abbreviation for the Latin ‘curriculum vitae’, or ‘the course of life’; its name implies an incorporation of life into work. With Curriculum Veto, Noa-Marthe validates the work that artists refuse, omit or hide, questioning the many types of “wasted” work that fall between the lines of the CV as we know it.
In the performance a “woman artist” receives unsolicited career advice from an algorithmically resurrected Leonardo da Vinci, historicised as the inventor of the CV. The performance foregrounds the role of bluffing and confession on art-world CVs, the absurd and euphemistic language used to disguise mundane jobs, and addresses the shocking conservatism of the art-world when it comes to women’s positions and representation.
After the show, the stage transforms into a white cube gallery: the audience is invited into Kunstgalerie Horsepower, where the entrepreneurial spirit of Leonardo resurfaces in the hawkish tradings of a commercial art dealer. On display are the Curriculum Vetoes of 11 contemporary artists: lists of refusals, gaps, boycotts, unpaid and underpaid renegotiations and reinterpretations of the conventional CV.
Curriculum Veto is written, developed and performed by Noa Marthe Prins. The performance is developed in consultation with/with the support of Art Goss, Het Nationale Theater Den Haag, John de Weerd, Robin van den Berg, Hennie Spronk, Workspace Brussels, Simon Baetens, AfK en Stimuleringsfonds.
