Sad by Design: Theory Jockeying

This performance-lecture deals with ‘technological sadness’, the default mental state of the billions online. Together with Amsterdam based musician John Longwalker internet critic, Geert Lovink developed his latest book Sad by Design into a performance that combines a lecture with samples, and several electronic music genres to begin mapping the new art of ‘theory jockeying’.
Geert Lovink― Artist
Geert Lovink is a Dutch media theorist, internet critic and author of Uncanny Networks (2002), Dark Fiber (2002), My First Recession (2003), Zero Comments (2007), Networks Without a Cause (2012), Social Media Abyss (2016) and Sad by Design (2019). In 2004 he founded the Institute of Network Cultures at the Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences. His centre organizes conferences, publications and research networks such as Video Vortex (online video), Unlike Us (alternatives in social media), Critical Point of View (Wikipedia), Society of the Query (the culture of search), MoneyLab (internet-based revenue models in the arts). Recent projects deal with digital publishing and the future of art criticism.
John Longwalker― Artist
John Longwalker is an Amsterdam-based musician, producer, and technology developer. His background is steeped in hip hop, subaltern political and cultural knowledge, and a critical rejection of purity. His current projects are far ranging, from the meditative space ambient music of Fire in the Middle, the forward thinking hip hop of FYS Faction, and the musical, theoretical, and technological playground that is We Are Not Sick. John also has a Masters Degree in New Media Theory at the Universiteit van Amsterdam and has worked with the collective Open Source Publishing (BE), with whom he ran design workshops around the world -- using only libre software.
Friso Wiersum― Moderator
Friso Wiersum (1976) is a program maker, moderator and connector. Friso works as project manager communications at the European Cultural Foundation. He also is a member of Expodium, an urban do tank which curates, teaches and publishes on art and the city. He sometimes reviews books, is a member of a dj collective, rides his bicycle and plays baseball.
