Spirit Tech: Winti Live
Jaasir Linger with Marian Markelo and Warimbo Krioro
Drums sound first. A voice calls to the ancestors. Song, explanation, rhythm and movement gather in a shared space where knowledge is carried not only through words but through sound and ceremony. This sonic lecture traces the living traditions of Afro-Surinamese Winti, approaching ritual as a system through which memory, history and spiritual relations continue to be transmitted.
Moving through a sequence of songs and interpretive reflections, each segment combines musical performance with contextual narration, revealing how Winti traditions hold stories of ancestral reverence, plantation histories and the long period during which the practice was formally prohibited.
The event is led by artist and Winti practitioner Jaasir Linger and brings together the Winti music formation Warimbo Krioro, dancers, and renowned Winti priestess Marian Markelo. Through percussion, song and spoken interpretation, the gathering becomes a living act of transmission – where ritual, music and embodied knowledge continue to sustain relations between ancestors, communities and the present.
