Tina Farifteh
Kitten or Refugee? (2023)
Iranian-Dutch artist Tina Farifteh reflects on how human power structures such as nation-states and corporations impact the lives of ordinary people. Her focus is often on those who are excluded from the privileges granted by the dominant political and economic systems, or who are damaged by them to make them ‘work’. In her film, Kitten or Refugee, Farifteh asks crucial questions about our innate behaviour: Why are we empathetic towards some people and indifferent or cruel towards others? Who gets to be at the top of our empathy ladder when we make life-or-death decisions? Are empathy and xenophobia different sides of the same coin?
After the screening, artist Tina Farifteh will talk about the complexities of human compassion and empathy, how these relate to societal structures and how she uses her art to help people reflect on these questions.
Kitten or Refugee? Is a co-production of Prospektor and VPRO.
The film is spoken in Dutch with English subtitles.
