“How hard would it be to build a database of all the Dutch?” – This question formed the starting point for SETUP’s project The National Birthday Calendar. Considering the fact that governments and large corporations are already in the business of gathering data at a large scale, SETUP found it was about time to have a go themselves.

The National Birthday Calendar is their attempt to build a database of all the Dutch, including their names, addresses and birthdays. And of course: including gift suggestions based on profiling algorithms.

For SETUP the project is an exploration as well as a means to create more awareness about Big Data and profiling among the public. The build up for this dubious database consists of three hackathons at the Central Library of Utrecht. The first one takes place during Impakt Festival and you are cordially invited to join! Be sure to bring your own laptop, we’ll take care of lunch.

Location: Central Library of Utrecht (Oudegracht 167, on the first floor).
