Professionals programme

We are excited to announce the programme of IMPAKT Festival’s 2022 Professionals Programme. Below you can find an overview of the events and their schedule. For the Professionals Programme of this year’s festival, we are inspired by the general concept of the festival, and added some additional topics, to open up discussions to challenge and further explore the field of media art. For further inquiries, please contact Daniela Tenenbaum at festival@impakt.nl

Alongside artists’ presentation dinners and networking opportunities, we will host two curated sessions with experts. The first session, Non-curating as Curation, will focus on collaborative and critical curation as a way to engage critically with societal debates. We will take documenta 15 as a case study to give practical elements to the discussion. The second session, Hybrid Formats, merging online and offline, will revolve around the production and development of hybrid event formats that bring together online and offline audiences. We invite professionals to engage, debate, discuss, inspire and contribute from their experience. The professional program is for accredited guests only.

Throughout the programme, we invite you to our professionals drinks to get to know the other professionals better. Please check our programme for a schedule of when the professionals drinks will take place. We will prepare an information sheet on the participants of the programme, so those who wish to attend these networking opportunities can know more about the other professionals who will attend the drinks.

Thursday 3 November

NON-CURATION AS CURATION
12:00 – 13:00 | Het Huis, Studio 2

Non-traditional curating methods have been on the rise for a few years. However, recent major cultural events redefined the notion of unconventional curating methods and gave prominence to societal issues, rather than emphasizing artistic value. In this discussion, we will use documenta 15 as a case study to examine curating as a way to bridge between cultures and add practical layers to the urgent discussion about the lack of diversity, representation and equity in the field of media art. Our invited experts will elaborate on their experience in implementing diverse voices into their practice and creating safe spaces for diverse cultural exploration and expression.

Moderated by Daniela Tenenbaum
Participants: Curators and cultural workers Lara Khaldi, Gertrude Flentge and Arthur Steiner.

OPENING DRINKS PROFESSIONALS PROGRAMME WITH CURATORS
20:30 – 21:00 | Het Huis, Foyer

Join us for drinks! Meet the participants of the professionals program and get to know one another while enjoying a nice drink. For this session, we will be joined by the curators of the festival Erik Bünger and Florian Wüst.

Friday 4 November

HYBRID FORMATS, MERGING ONLINE AND OFFLINE
13:30 – 14:30 Het Huis, Studio 2 and online

In this collaborative session, we will discuss the latest steps IMPAKT has made toward developing successful hybrid formats and focus on the knowledge of different artists and organizers who work on and with hybrid formats. The participants in this session will build a glossary for hybrid events, including (but not limited to) format suggestions, interesting readings, different software to use, etc. During the discussion about the glossary, the artists will give their input based on the projects they are working on and share their experiences. For this discussion, we will not only focus on the technical but also on the sociological and psychological aspects of hybridity.

Moderated by Arjon Dunnewind and Marijke Hessels
Participants: Patricia Villanueva (Laboral Centro de Arte, Gijon), Heracles Papatheodorou (Onassis Stegi, Athens), Sandra Sterle (Kontejner, Zagreb), Sander Veenhof, Angelique Spaninks and Babusi Nyoni (METAVERSES CHA-CHA-CHA dance party) and artist Benjamin Pompe.

Hybrid Formats is organised by IMPAKT as part of the Capacity Building Workshop series of the European Media Art Platform (EMAP), co-funded by the European Union’s Creative Europe Programme. The session is also part of the project ‘The New Social’, a collaboration between IMPAKT [Center for Media Culture], Framer Framed and Hackers & Designers and with the support of the Innovation Labs programme of the Creative Industries Fund NL.

PROFESSIONALS DINNER: BENY WAGNER & SASHA LITVINTSEVA
17:00 – 19:00 Het Huis, Studio 2
There are limited spots available for this event!

In this presentation dinner, we will get to know Sasha Litvintseva & Beny Wagner better. The artists-duo will discuss their film Constant, which is presented as part of the exhibition of the festival. This dinner presentation will provide the professionals with a behind-the-scenes look into the working process of Litvintseva and Wagner.

The two artists will present My Want of You Partakes of Me, which they are developing during their residency at IMPAKT, as part of the European Media Art Platform programme. My Want of You Partakes of Me explores the boundaries of our bodies, both physical and perceptual, through a visual narration of five stories taken from across a long historical period. The participants in this dinner will get an exclusive peek into this project by learning about the concept behind the film and seeing short clips that Litvintseva and Wagner are preparing in advance.

Saturday 5 November

PROFESSIONALS DINNER: ZACHARY FORMWALT
17:00 – 19:00 | Het Huis, Studio 2
There are limited spots available for this event!

Zachary Formwalt’s work An Industry and Its Irreplaceable Medium stands as a key work in the exhibition of IMPAKT Festival 2022. Being one of the few commissioned works we are presenting in the exhibition, we had the pleasure of working with Formwalt and experiencing his visual interpretation of the festival’s theme. In the presentation dinner, Formwalt will discuss his unique perception of how the most dissatisfying type of technology is the one that works.

DRINKS PROFESSIONALS PROGRAMME

Don’t miss out on the opportunity to celebrate and reflect on the week spent at the IMPAKT Festival with other professionals!

Info sessions

IMPAKT is involved in and initiates many great projects. Currently, we have two open calls for different programmes. During the festival, we will meet to present these projects and open calls and answer any questions you might have. Here are the details of the info sessions we are planning during the IMPAKT Festival:

EMAP INFO SESSION
Thursday 3 November, 13:30 – 14:30 | Het Huis, Foyer

The European Media Art Platform (EMAP), co-funded by the Creative Europe Programme of the European Union aims to support collaboration projects by emerging artists who work critically with technologies in the fields of video, digital art, robotics, bio art and other forms of media art. For more info on our EMAP open call, please refer to this link.

CODE INFO SESSION
Saturday 5 November, 13:30 – 14:30 | Het Huis, Foyer

CODE was initiated in 2021 as a response to growing concerns that we are losing agency over the digital tools and platforms we use daily. We believe in the need for better laws and legislation that will protect us as digital citizens and consumers. By creating creative and artistic interventions, we aim to influence public policy on a national and international level and to create awareness for the issues at hand. We want to inspire and facilitate cross-disciplinary collaborations, which have the potential to catalyse system change. CODE 2023 will be the third edition. In the past two editions, we supported almost 50 artists and non-artists to work together and create projects. We also brought together national and European politicians and experts in interviews, panels and presentations, and we presented the participants’ projects at international events including Ars Electronica, Dutch Design Week, Dutch Media Week and the CPDP Conference. The results and all interviews and talks can also be seen at code.impakt.nl.
For more info on our CODE open call, please refer to this link.
