ARTIST IN RESIDENCE
CAETANO CARVALHO & LEANDRO CARDOSO
During their residency at IMPAKT, Caetano Carvalho & Leandro Nerefuh are working with the idea of a digital archaeology and how animated GIFs can be considered a sort of archaeological and cultural artifact. The artists incorporate technological media in a performative and even ritualistic dimension in which conceptions of nature, culture, and technology are in play.
Their residency entails the presentation at CVLT FEST from 8-10 June, of the installation ‘GIF Cave’ – a hermetic cave-like environment composed of multiple artifacts and projected animated images (GIFs). Based on the classical use of the ‘cave’ as a philosophical trope (in Plato, Nietzsche, Waly Salomão, Mike Kelley), the GIF Cave will have an allegorical and ritualistic purpose for those inside it. In the GIF Cave, we will abandon the ghost of ‘truth’ and dance to the rebirth of the Croatan.
To conclude their residency, in a three-day workshop on 19, 20 and 21 June, Caetano and Leandro will introduce the idea of a digital archaeology and discuss how animated GIFs can be considered a sort of archaeological and cultural artifact. We will show examples of contemporary art practices that incorporate technological media in a performative and even ritualistic dimension in which conceptions of nature, culture and technology are in play. The workshop will also include a series of practical exercises based on objects built for our installation the ‘GIF Cave’.
