LEANDRO CARDOSO & CAETANO CARVALHO: WORKSHOP GIF ALCHEMY
19 June 2012 — 21 June 2012
14:00 — 17:00
LOCATION: IMPAKT CENTRE FOR MEDIA CULTURE
To conclude their residency, Caetano and Leandro will present a three-day workshop on 19, 20 and 21 June continuing to explore the idea of a digital archaeology.
At the first edition of Cult Fest from 8-10 June, Caetano Carvalho and Leandro Cardoso presented the GIF Cave: an installation in the wharf cellar of Oudegracht 183 (Utrecht) with GIF-projections, 3D printed objects and musical performances and lectures.
In the workshop, they now invite young artists and scientist to further examine how animated GIFs can be considered archaeological and cultural artifacts of sorts. They will show examples of contemporary art practices that incorporate technological media in a performance-like and even ritualistic dimension in which conceptions of nature, culture and technology all play a part. The workshop will also include a series of practical exercises based on objects built for our installation the ‘GIF Cave’.
“My legs bite, I found our cave! There’s a gypsum fossil in there and an animated gif that has been looping for 7,000,000,000 years. Even though no carbon 14 determination was possible. Contrary to what people think, humans evolved in the steppe and its caves while the ape evolved in the forest. Every prophet with their own cave: Plato, Zarathustra, Waly Dada Salomão, Mike Kelley… and us. Mankind developed its constructivist impetus in the cave. The gif cave is not only a classical philosophical trope but also the human cradle. It is there that we find the most ancient inscriptions. Whilst the gypsum 3D print dries THE HUMAN WAS MADE OUT OF CLAY WAS MADE”
